Zultanite originates exclusively from the İlbir Mountains in southwest Turkiye.
Origin and Mining Facts:
Location: The Ilbir Mountains deposit, situated near the town of Milas in Muğla Province, is the sole known commercial source of gem-quality diaspore.
Naming: Zultanite is named in honour of the 36 Sultans of the Ottoman Empire that ruled Turkiye and beyond from 1299 to 1923.
Unique Feature: Zultanite is a colour-change variety of the mineral Diaspore and is only found in one deposit in the mountains of Turkiye.
Colour-Changing Properties:
Zultanite's colour shift is primarily caused by manganese impurities within its crystal structure. Most scientists agree that manganese impurities are the cause of Zultanite's colour change. Internally, the more complicated reason for the colour change has to do with light passing through the stone and splitting into different colours.
Unlike other colour-changing stones that only toggle between two main shades, a single authentic Zultanite can display a massive palette depending on the light source:
Sunlight / Daylight:
Appears kiwi green or golden-yellow with subtle yellow and blue flashes.
Indoor / Traditional Lighting:
Shifts to a soft champagne, olive green, or ginger-ale hue.
Candlelight / Firelight:
Transforms into a deep raspberry pink or purplish pink.
Additionally, Zultanite is pleochroic. This means that simply viewing the stone from different angles under the exact same light source will reveal different colors, such as gold, green, and pink.
